Scripture for Today

Jonah 1:3 But Jonah got up and went the other direction to Tarshish, running away from God. He went down to the port of Joppa and found a ship headed for Tarshish. He paid the fare and went on board, joining those going to Tarshish—as far away from God as he could get.

During the US civil war Abraham Lincoln met with a group of ministers for a prayer breakfast. Lincoln was not a church-goer but was a man of deep, if at times unorthodox, faith. At one point one of the ministers said, “Mr President, let us pray that God is on our side”. Lincoln’s response showed far greater insight, “No, gentlemen, let us pray that we are on God’s side.”

Lincoln reminded those ministers that religion is not a tool by which we get God to do what we want but an invitation to open ourselves to being and doing what God wants.

I could just imagine what was going on in Jonah's mind when he decided to run away from God's assignment. How was he thinking he could run away from God?

When God gives you an assignment or a purpose to fulfill he gives you all that you need to fulfill it. He always makes a way and always fulfills his words concerning our lives. Yes! Fear of failure or just sheer disobedience could come in the way of us obeying our creator.

Just like Jonah you might be going just the opposite way. You know the direction you are going is not where you are supposed to be going. Why not make a U-turn before you get entangled in the belly of fish.

Prayer: Father, help me obey you totally.
